What constitutes touch typing?
Touch typing is the ability to type quickly and accurately without looking at the keyboard. Once a speed of 30 words per minute is achieved with high accuracy, touch typing typically becomes an embedded muscle memory.
What age can children attend the courses?
It is ideal to start learning to around aged eight. However, we accept younger children if they can concentrate for the duration of the session. Younger children are often very enthusiastic and enjoy the programme.
How long does it take to learn to touch type?
This varies from individual to individual. For children aged 10 yrs and above, 20 hours is the average time to develop touch typing skills. However, the time required can differ from child to child.
Can touch typing help with spelling?
Yes it can. Frequently-typed become stored in muscle memory. Dyslexic children are often allowed laptops at secondary school and being able to touch type enables them to work more quickly.
Where do the sessions take place?
The holiday courses are held at High March School in Beaconsfield.
Do children work at their own speed?
Yes, the programme allows children to progress at their own speed. It includes initial lessons, games, practice sessions and speed boosters. The teacher guides each child on their next steps, which very depending on their accuracy and typing speed. Without guidance, a child might move on to new letters before mastering the current set.
How long are the sessions?
Each session lasts 1hr 45mins. Children bring a drink and a snack, and there is a break half way through. During the break, children eat their snack, choose items for their goodie bags and weather-permitting play outside in the school playground.
Can I learn to touch type for the skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh award?
Yes, the new skill has to be practised for at least 15 hours over at least a 3 month period.
